In Ohio, the owner or keeper of a dog is strictly liable for any injury, death, or loss to a person or property that is caused by the dog. In a matter of seconds, a dog can cause serious injury, often resulting in unsightly scarring. In the unfortunate event

that an injury does occur, the dog owner or keeper is responsible to the injured victim for the damage caused.

What to do if you are bitten by a dog

If you or a family member is bitten by a dog it is important to do the following:

1) If possible, identify the dog and its owner. If unable to identify the owner, call your local animal control officer.

2) If your skin has been broken by the dog bite, seek immediate medical attention. By identifying the dog, it can be tested for rabies and your medical care providers will know what kind of medical treatment is required.

3) Get the name and contact information of any witnesses.

4) Document all of your wounds, bruises, and scratches with photographs.

5) If possible, obtain insurance information from the dog owner. Indicate that you have incurred medical expenses and need the contact information of their homeowner’s or renter’s insurance carrier.
